Month One

One month down! We have learnt so much over the last month both about ourselves as a family and about the world we live in. Month one took us to Greece, Turkiye and Egypt.

We started in Athens and learnt about the Ancient Greeks and enjoyed the Greek bakeries. From there we caught a ferry to Lesvos and lived the Greek Island life for a few days.

We caught another ferry to Ayvalik in Turkiye then drove up to Cannakale past the ancient city of Troy and the Gallipoli battlefields. The Turkish road trip ended in Istanbul where we stayed in a colourful house and fell in love with the fish kebabs.

On leaving Istanbul we stood in three continents in one day and landed in Egypt just after midnight. We chose Hurghada for the cheap flight and the waterslides but as beach resorts are the last place Craig likes to be seen we swiftly left for Luxor. We stayed on the west bank of the Nile and instantly felt transported to another land full of narrow dusty streets and ancient tombs. From Luxor we flew to Cairo and have spent over a week Uber-ing around the pyramids and malls.

A long travel day via Abu Dhabi has now taken us to Kochin, India for our next adventure of exploring the backwaters of Kerala.

Travelling as a family is an amazing experience with many highs and lows. We have learnt to slow down our travel to immerse ourselves in the local culture and to have breaks in between the hectic sightseeing. Here are some of our highs so far:

Luxor

Sarah – One of my highlights so far is Luxor. Staying on the west bank of Luxor, away from the tourist trail, was so different and it felt like we had been transported back to the past. The local people were so friendly, if not a bit pushy and scammy!

Craig – Exploring the ‘bent’ pyramids with Phoebe. It was a challenging climb through narrow tunnels and we both loved the experience.

Phoebe – Climbing in the pyramid with Daddy was one of my favourite things too. I also loved the malls in Cairo as they had amazing food places like Hans & Gretel sweet shop and super cheap Starbucks. Also activities such as Kidzania and Ski Egypt.

Sophie – My favourite thing so far was Ski Egypt in Cairo. I loved the snow and slides!
