Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, was our final stop in Taiwan. We caught a bullet train from Taichung after our mammoth road trip and we were looking forward to a break! We spent our days wandering around the city and eating, as per usual.

We celebrated Phoebe’s birthday with her choice of activities – shopping, getting her nails done, drinking bubble tea and eating at Modern Toilet which is as it sounds – a toilet themed restaurant! This was the most random of novelty cafes we have been to so far. I ate a hotpot from a toilet, Craig had a curry which was also in a toilet, the girls had poo pancakes and drank sprite from a urinal.

Taipei has a great selection of themed 7-Elevens including one of the girls favourite characters – Sanrio. Convenience stores have become a staple of our day in Taiwan and our breakfast is usually one of the bread items and a cheap coffee.

We visited Taipei 101, a 101-story skyscraper which was officially the world’s tallest from 2004 until it was surpassed the Burj Khalifa (which we first visited as a family in 2017) in 2010. We skipped the expensive official viewing platform and instead bought an overpriced coffee at Simple Kaffa on the 88th floor to get an impressive view of the city.

Taiwan holds the accolade of our favourite visited country so far in our tour. We are keen to visit China but the visa process is not easy so we will keep that as a future trip. Our next stop however is one step closer to China – Hong Kong!
