Australia was never in the plan! I last came here in 2003 (East coast, loved it) and Craig in 1997 (all over, also loved it) and Craig had always said that his time in Australia was so special he didn’t want to ruin the memories. Fast forward to December 2024 and an invitation from Aaron (who Craig had travelled and lived with in 1997) to spend Christmas with him resulted in us immediately arranging a detour to Perth! Surprisingly, Malaysia and Western Australia are on the same time zone so we merely switched our humid city life to beachy, sunny WA.
Luckily Santa found us in Perth, crashing through the log burner. We enjoyed an Aussie Chrissy which felt so different to what we are used to with it’s sunshine and garden cricket. The best part was spending it with Aaron and his family who spoiled us with a lovely festive spread, chocolate, prosecco and children to play with!
Perth was a welcome break from travelling and we relished the home comforts. Aaron and Opal the pug were so generous in letting us take over their house and car for 3 weeks. We thought about travelling around Western Australia but our trip coincided with the summer holidays so there was a lack of available and affordable accommodation. Perth has so many things though that this was not an issue. We swam in lakes and beaches and the girls tried out most of the parks which were the best we have found anywhere in the world with amazing facilities. We cooked many meals on the free BBQs and developed some new culinary inventions including the baked bean cheese wrap and a smores delight! Other regular eats included Slurpees and the usual fast foods including Burger King masquerading as Hungry Jacks.
We brunched in the city, cycled through it and watched Paddington under the stars. The girls e-scooted through Mandurah. We swam and bush walked through Kalamunda. Scarborough beach gave us sunsets and DJs.
Thanks Perth, we loved you and hope to be back one day. Having a holiday from a holiday was a real treat! Now it is time to get the backpacks back on and return to Malaysia to continue the world tour. Phoebe is Duolingoing Japanese to ensure that we visit her must-see Tokyo so the journey is most likely to go in a north then east direction through South East Asia then eastwards through East Asia.
